What is Holi?
Holi is ancient Hindu festival that marks the arrival of spring and is mainly celebrated through India and Nepal. Holi is also known as the festival of colour.
Traditions:
Holi has numerous traditions but one of the main one is the throwing of coloured powder and water. The coloured powder they throw at their family and friends to create a vibrant spectacle is actually called gulal.
Food:
At holi we also eat lots of yummy foods to celebrate. Some of the Holi favourites are gujiya a fried dumpling with sweet sugar and syrup, dahi vada fried lentil dumplings and Papori crispy dough wafers.
History:
Holi is important because it brings people back together and fixes relationships. One of the legends is that Holika tried to burn her nephew Prahlad in a fire but burned herself instead and Prahlad was saved by Lord Vishnu. Holi celebrates good over evil.
